William

Prince of Wied

William V, Prince of Wied (German: Wilhelm Adolph Maximilian Karl Fürst von Wied; 22 August 1845 – 22 October 1907) was a German army officer and politician, elder son of Hermann, Prince of Wied. He was the father of William, Prince of Albania and brother of Queen Elisabeth of Romania. By birth he was a member of the House of Wied. William was the second child and first son of Hermann, Prince of Wied (1814–1864), son of Johann August Karl, Prince of Wied (1779-1836) and Princess Sophie Auguste of Solms-Braunfels (1796-1855), and his wife, Princess Marie of Nassau (1825–1902), daughter of William, Duke of Nassau and his first wife, Princess Louise of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Through his mother he was descendant of William IV Stadtholder of the Netherlands and George II of Great Britain.

Garderegiment Grenadiers. After Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo in 1815 and the Northern and Southern Netherlands were merged into one state, there were no more grenadiers in the army. There was also no guard regiment; one of the four Swiss Infantry Divisions that the Netherlands had 'capitulated', Division No. 32, functioned as a kind of guard unit and, for example, stood guard at the Royal Palace. Things were not going well between the Northern and Southern Netherlands. Under pressure from the Confederates, the king abolished the four royal Swiss departments (nos. 29, 30, 31 and 32) on December 31, 1828. To replace this, Prince Frederik (second son of the king and Minister of War) proposed establishing a department (later called a regiment) of grenadiers and two battalions of 'jagers'. This proposal was implemented in 1829. Nowadays, the grenadiers form a guard regiment in the Dutch army that is closely linked to the jagers: the Guard Regiment Grenadiers and Jagers. The title of a soldier in the Grenadiers is Grenadier.
